first goal of the game gainst Patton on Friday.
The win completes a season sweep of the Lady Panthers after last month’s 1-0 Freedom road victory.

“This was a must-win,” Freedom coach David Fletcher said. “We didn’t frame it that way whentalking to the kids, but we had to win this game to have a shot, and I think this gives us a pretty good shot to get in the playoffs.”

Freedom (7-8-3, 2-7-3 Northwestern 3A/4A Conf.) scored just two minutes into the game when sophomore Joella Knopf finished off an assist from senior Bailey Xaysanavongphet.

The margin went to 3-0 Freedom by halftime, as senior Kayla Roether scored off an assist by classmate Angie Sandoval and Roether assisted Knopf later in the opening 40 minutes.

“That first goal was big and really gave us the momentum,” Fletcher added. “Bailey touched the ball over, and Joella ran onto it and scored. And getting a 3-0 lead in the first half was good.”
After 35 scoreless minutes ensued, Freedom tallied two late goals when Sandoval gathered an assist from senior Anna Taylor on a breakaway, and senior Logan Dunston pounded one into the back of the net from close-range on the right side of the box off a feed from Sandoval.

“I know (Patton) had a tough game (Thursday) playing 100 minutes, and that might have played in our favor,” Fletcher said. “But any win in this conference, you don’t take it for granted.”
Freedom outshot Patton by a 23-8 margin and attempted six corner kicks to the Lady Panthers’ one. Lady Patriots senior goalkeeper AkiQula Mills recorded the shutout with seven saves, while her counterpart, sophomore Harlee Livsey, notched eight saves for Patton (2-14-2, 0-11-1 NWC).
